WEARING an orange prisoner outfit and a balaclava was not the way that Australian man Norman Leslie John Polson anticipated spending his 80th birthday in Bali.
The 80-year-old is in custody at Kuta police station in Bali, accused of causing serious injury to a Scotsman, which carries five years in jail.
Polson told News Corp he did use the knife against the other man, but only under provocation.
“I did it, I only did it under provocation. He started it, I retaliated, but he’s not charged, only me,” Polson said.
Polson was arrested one week ago after the argument with a Scottish man in a Kuta bar saw a knife, with a 10cm blade, produced and the other man stabbed in the hand and arm.
He has since been kept in a police cell with five other prisoners.

In farcical scenes, Polson was brought out wearing a balaclava on his head which was eventually lifted so that he could talk. He then gave his version of events toNews Corp.
He said the other man shouted to the woman running the bar that he wanted Polson out.
“I laughed because he say something bloody stupid. He come running around the side, he said you laughed at me, he grabbed me here,” he said, indicating the other man had grabbed him by the throat.
“I reached over and grabbed my bag I had the knife in. I said go away, leave me alone, go,” Polson told, indicating holding the knife in front of him in defence.

“He just wrestled me to go to the ground and as I am going, I went like that and stabbed him in the arm,” he said, indicating hold the knife in front of him.
Polson said he had carried a knife for self-defence for the past three months since he was mugged by a thief who took his phone, bank cards and glasses.
“So now I carry a knife, never again happen to me.”
Asked if the Scottish victim had often offended him, Polson said: “We argue all the time.”
An Australian known only as Patrick visited Polson, bringing food and toiletries, expressing a wish that Polson is soon released.
Police however say that he will be charged with article 351 of the Criminal Code, carrying a maximum five years jail, for severe wounding.
It is understood that Polson, whose place of birth is listed as Melbourne, has been living in Bali.
